Here are some pictures from a typical Tahitian Games competition. The first are coconut splitting contests to see which team can split, cleanout and then gather and bag the coconut the fastest.

We had entertainment in between the games. It took 4 good-sized men to carry in this drum.

The drum was as big as the little boy playing it .

Next came the spear throwing. These men were throwing spears at a coconut atop a 20 foot pole. The spear closest to the top won.

The 3rd game was stone lifting. There were 3 weight classes: 60 kilos, 80 kilos and 104 kilos. A kilo is equal to about 2.2 pounds. The contestants were to lift the stone to their shoulder, balance it and let go of one hand.

Even the women participated.

There were crafts there too. The first ones are a carved marlin nose. The next men are carving rosewood.

  1. Love all your pictures and reading about your adventures. :) We miss you guys! Brekken and Preston asked about you the other day - they wondered why "Sister Heaven" never brings cookies anymore!
